Open OS Battle: Symbian Vs. Android Vs. LiMo

Forbes has an interesting article titled “Symbian And LiMo Take On Android.” Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has an incredibly strong brand, of course, but Symbian is in hundreds of millions of handsets around the world…yet many people view it as the underdog. It’s a sign of the times that Symbian is not viewed as the one to take down.

Some stats from the article:
— Symbian has 81 members backing the platform, and plans to have over 100 by the end of the year. Google’s Android-centric Open Handset Alliance (OHA) and LiMo each have between 50 and 60 members. Symbian is meeting with Asian manufacturers to increase the range of devices that run its OS.
— Google plans to “announce “significant” Android devices soon. Gadgets on tap include smart phones from Samsung, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), LG (SEO: 066570) and Huawei and likely notebooks from HP and Eee PC maker Asus.
— LiMo will respond with its own flood of phones from Samsung and other manufacturers. In February, six of the foundation’s largest operator members agreed to offer new LiMo handsets in 2009.” Still a long way to go to catch up to Symbian in handset volume, but is evaluating netbooks at about the same time as Symbian.

Then they still have to compete with the proprietary smartphones systems such as those from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and RIM.
