T-Mobile has announced a deal with Echelon — which sells equipment for smart electricity grids — to embed a SIM in its smart meters — which will allow machine-to-machine communication. The embedded SIMs are about the size of the head of a pin and made of silicon rather than plastic, which makes them more durable. Echelon aside, the embedded SIMs indicate T-Mobile’s move into M2M communications, seen as the next growth area for telcos. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is using the open part of its network for that.
