It’s official: Bluetooth 3.0 + HS is the real deal and as expected, will support faster transfers. How fast? Michael Foley, Ph.D., is the executive director of the Bluetooth SIG and I expect he’s better at that role than as an amateur movie buff. He says: “Like Ricky Bobby in ‘Talladega Nights,’ this latest version was ‘born to go fast.” To each his own, but when I saw “Talladega Nights,” the end couldn’t come fast enough. Anyway, to answer the question of speed, you can expect data transfers of up to 24 Mbps with the new specification.
There was some prior hoo-ha about the current hardware’s ability to use the new spec via a software upgrade, but I really haven’t heard any news on that front. Broadcom did release news that their BCM4325 chip is already certified for the new spec, so if your device has this all-in-one 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth and FM chip in it, you’re all set. The rest of us have to wait. How long? The Bluetooth SIG says consumer products supporting the new spec should become available within 9-12 months. That’s a bit long for my taste… not “Talledega Nights” long, but long nonetheless.
