Report: Individualized Services To Earn $2.9 Billion By 2011

Service personalization (which includes subscriber data management, subscriber profiling, policy control, real-time charging, location and presence) will grow from delivering $806 million to mobile operators last year to about $2.9 billion in 2011, predicts ABI Research. Importantly for the mobile content industry the easiest part of this for telcos is to implement real-time charging for prepay mobile phone users, which make up the majority of users in the world. A larger market means more sales and revenue. Another opportunity is for “metered broadband”, giving people the chance to access the mobile internet on an ad hoc basis or to extend the access they get in their plan in real time. Some telcos already do this, offering 24-hour internet access for $1, for example. Other personalized services include customized Web browsing, parental controls, and enhanced control of text messaging which will enable users to block certain numbers, set some automated forwarding rules, and otherwise configure their SMS.
