A Blogger Is Among India’s 50 Most Powerful People, Says Businessweek

We are not big fans of awards and listings, but this one caught our eye. Amit Varma, blogger at India Uncut, is one of the most powerful people in India, according to Businessweek (It must be said upfront that this reporter has known Amit personally for a while). Any such list will surely be subject to plenty of quarrel, and we ourselves think the adjective powerful doesn’t sit well with some on the list–Varma, writer Ramachandra Guha and Colors’ programming chief Ashwini Yardi, for instance. Admired/respected/influential? Yes. Powerful? Really?

We are delighted, however, that someone who is best known for his blog, features alongside the country’s top politicians, industrialists and sportspeople. And to be perceived to be influential to that extent, in a country where less than 5% of the population uses the Internet, is some achievement.

Other media/digital media people in the list: BCCL’s Vineet Jain, UTV’s Ronnie Screwvala, Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) India MD Shailesh Rao and Rediff.com’s Ajit Balakrishnan. It’s pointless to argue with a subjective list, but since we are talking about power, I’m surprised to not see any of our high-profile television anchor-editors.
