Intel Ups the Atom Ante: Claims They’re For MIDs

atom-logoThe Intel Atom processor turned one year old, and in celebration, the chipmaker announced two new versions of the Atom. The Z550 gets a speed boost up to 2 GHz with hyperthreading, and the Z515 will sport Intel’s new Burst Performance Technology which allows the processor to run at 1.2 GHz when max performance is needed. This sounds like the old Speed Step to me, but maybe there’s something else inside too.

The Atom processor is the standard chipset for netbooks but in the announcement Intel made it clear these new chips are aimed at Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). Intel is apparently not going to give up on the MID genre, even though it hasn’t seen any real action. I’m sure we’ll see at least the Z550 appear in netbooks once released, as it is definitely the hot category by anyone’s standards.
