Broadband Content Bits: BSkyB 3DTV; North West Funding; Babelgum Doc

imageSky 3DTV: BSkyB (NYSE: BSY) has carried its first live 3DTV trial, in what it claims to be the UK’s first live broadcast in 3D to a domestic TV set. Sky+HD customers who have 3D-enabled TVs (yes, both of them) on Thursday could see a live concert from indie band Keane in 3D, as the band simultaneously broadcast the gig on its website. Sky has already shown recorded sports events using 3D, but this was its first live trial. It’s a forward-looking project and the company claims it shows its Sky+ boxes are 3D-ready for if and when 3D TVs become widely available and affordable.

North West Vision and Media: The North West Development Agency has announced it will give £3 million in extra funding to Northwest Vision and Media, which advises and funds digital and creative companies in the region. The company is now responsible for promoting and growing digital games, media, music and production companies on a local and national level. Vision and Media hopes the deal will help it secure funds from the European Regional Development Fund later this year. Release.

Babelgum: The video site has won the online and mobile rights to original documentary The Linguists, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The Ironbound Films production, which follows the story of two scientists documenting world languages before they die out, will be available from April 20. The site is also adding an original wildlife series, Extinction Sucks, produced by Off The Fence Productions and commissioned by Bablegum. The six-part series is available online and on mobile and will be distributed to other video sites worldwide. Release.
