Mobile Content Bits: 3M Virtual Zippos; WHERE WAP; 400M GetJar Downloads; PlayPhone Deal With NTELOS

3 Million Virtual Zippo Lighters: The Virtual Zippo Lighter iPhone app has been downloaded more than three million times since it was released last October, and it’s still seeing about 100,000 new downloads per week. The app has stayed in the top 40 free download apps over the last five months, whereas most apps have a shelf life of 30 days in the top 40 according to Moderati, who made the app. The whole point is to build brand awareness, so Zippo must be happy with the result for what is a fairly simple app.

Where WAP: Where has built a location-enabled WAP service for data-enabled Sprint (NYSE: S) phones. Where recently launched an application for the Android G1, which got over 16,000 users in the first 24 hours and now has over 50,000 users; it also launched an app for the BlackBerry Storm which was downloaded over 7,500 times in the first 24 hours.

GetJar Hits 400M Downloads: Mobile app store GetJar has announced that it has surpassed 400 million downloads of mobile applications since it launched in 2004. Interestingly, the last month saw a 200 percent increase in downloads compared to the same month a year earlier — the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) App Store halo in play? The site averages 30 million downloads a month. GetJar also did a survey of its users which found that in the US the most popular time to use mobile applications is just before going to bed (at 33 percent) followed by 27 percent of respondents saying they use mobile applications whenever they are waiting for someone or something. The respondents said they are more likely to discover mobile apps and content from friends (36 percent) or browsing and searh (21 percent).

PlayPhone To Run NTELOS Portal: PlayPhone has signed a deal with US regional telco NTELOS Wireless to offer its subscription service to NTELOS customers on-deck and through the website. The content includes branded ringtones, videos, games and wallpaper.

State Radio IPhone App: Indie band State Radio has followed in the footsteps of The Presidents of the United States of America and launched an iPhone app for their fans (also created by Melodeo). The $2.99 app includes a number of albums, as well as unreleased live material and a new track. It will be updated regularly with exclusive content.
