Cell phone hoopla: Android says “look at me”, “look at me”

All the talk these days seems to be about Apple’s iPhone 3.0 and the Palm Pre but the Android folks are saying, “Hey, what about us?”  This week HTC CEO Peter Chou stated that the handset giant will be releasing “at least three” Android handsets this year.  While this is a bit short of the five handsets HTC previously said they’d put out this year, three is a 300% increase in the number of Android handsets available today.  Producing three different Android handsets in a short time would indicate that HTC will be pushing the form-factor envelope, as I’d expect them to be significantly different to be viable.

Recently a Samsung handset running Android was spotted in a fuzzy photo of a presentation in Amsterdam.  The photo is very blurry but clearly shows Android running on a touch-screen handset by Samsung.  There are no other details about this phone available.

All of these activities makes it clear that Android is about to land in a big way.  Google must be getting giddy at the thought of all these Android phones getting ready to jump out of the chute.  We geeks certainly are.
