SuperTalent UltraDrive SSDs Now Shipping, Won’t Bankrupt You

Image 1 for post SuperTalent launches cheaper SSD drives using MLC technology( 2008-05-06 15:46:13) Remember back in December when we heard about those new SSD drives from SuperTalent? Those UltraDrives were only just announced back then and pricing wasn’t available. The company told us to expect the drives to ship early in the new year and the only pricing expectation provided was the 256GB unit coming in around $899, street price.

I don’t know if I’d call March 17th early in the year, but the good news is that the line of drives is now shipping. Here’s some better news: the pricing looks less than expected. That 256GB UltraDrive ME model can be had for $645 over at NewEgg. That’s still a chunk o’ change, but far better than nearly $900. I also see smaller capacities with smaller pricetags as well: 128GB for $309, 64GB for $205. All of these drives fit in 2.5-inch bays and use MLC flash memory with a SATA II interface. SuperTalent advertises reads and writes at a fast 230MBps and 170MBps respectively for these drives.
