The Symbian Foundation is sharing the next two years of planning and efforts for the S60 mobile operating system. There isn’t much in terms of what’s going in the releases, but it looks like we’ll see updates every six months. The proof of the pudding is based on the features and fixes of course, but I like the timing. I’ve criticized some mobile device players for slow and lumbering progress with updates, so the Symbian plans get an initial thumbs up.
Even though the plan takes us two years out, it’s possible to see a new major Symbian release on hardware before year end: “Symbian^2, which is based on S60 5.1, reaches a functionally complete state at the middle of this year, and should be hardened by the end of the year.” Might this release ramp-up help declining market share of the OS? Again, it depends on the functions and features. I hope that there’s some effort in simplifying the UI, because that (along with subsidization deals) would go a long way toward helping the platform.
