Dennis Crowley is starting another mobile company named after yet another game played by school children. In 2004, Crowley started Dodgeball, which allowed you to broadcast your whereabouts and see if any of your friends were nearby. A year later, he sold it to Google (NSDQ: GOOG), which failed to ever do much with the technology and shutdown the service last week. So, what is Crowley doing now? Silicon Alley Insider reports that he, along with Naveen Selvadurai, are starting a new company called Foursquare.
It’s unclear what Crowley likes about games with red rubber balls, but here’s the basics on the iPhone application: The application will be similar to Dodgeball because it allows people to check into bars around the U.S. The difference is that you will gain points and rewards for checking in. The rewards aren’t monetary, but rather would be something like “Bender” badge if you go out four nights in a row, or if you go to all the douchebag hangouts in one city, you’d be honored with a “douchebag” badge for your bravery. The app is expected to be available soon on the iPhone, but there’s no mention of a version for Google Android.
