The number of operators that plan to roll out 4G networks using LTE has grown to 26, according to research conducted by GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association. The research, which can be read in a white paper, found that up to 10 of the networks will be launched commercial services next year.
While that sounds like good progress, the technology path is still very much in the early stages. For instance, a group of technology companies said today that they are coming together to figure out how voice services over LTE will work. The group is called Voice over LTE via Generic Access, or VoLGA Forum for short. Companies backing the effort include: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC), Huawei, Kineto Wireless, LG Electronics (SEO: 066570), Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Nortel, Samsung, Starent Networks, T-Mobile and ZTE. Together, the backers are hoping to figure out how the upcoming LTE radio access networks can use the same core 2G and 3G networks operators use today to support voice services. Release.
