– Archant: Any neighbouring regional newspapers sharing a common owner that haven’t merged newsrooms must surely be on the way to doing so. The latest are Archant’s Norfolk titles, the Eastern Daily Press, Norwich Evening News and 15 weekly titles, which are merging newsrooms at the cost of up to 54 jobs from its editorial workforce of 179. It’s part of group-wide cuts across Archant that have already seen 20 jobs go at its Suffolk centre and the closure of some London offices. Like other publishers like Trinity Mirror (LSE: TNI), the company is investing in new technology and is starting training on an “integrated editorial system”. From PG.
— Northcliffe Media: Another newspaper group, another “rationalisation” of resources: DMGT-owned Northcliffe Media is cutting up to 95 jobs and shutting a series of free titles in the south-east of England as part of an ongoing restructuring programme. The company says that some 20 jobs could be created in the move and that some titles will become “hybrid paid/free titles”, perhaps meaning they will be paid-for on certain days of the week or free in some areas. Northcliffe will create a centralised “production hub” in Chelmsford, just as it created a single production office serve its North East and Midlands titles, resulting in the loss of 50 jobs.
