Reuters is reporting that Finnish handset giant Nokia has admitted they are considering entering the laptop market. In an interview in Finland, CEO Pekka Kallasvuo was asked if Nokia plans to make laptops and had this response:
“We are looking very actively also at this opportunity… We don’t have to look even for five years from now to see that what we know as a mobile phone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging.”
Entering the laptop industry is not that big a stretch for Nokia, especially when you look at the tremendous netbook market. These low-cost notebooks seem to be tailor-made for companies like Nokia looking to break into the laptop market. Nokia is such a major player in the phone industry they could no doubt leverage that strength to make good deals with companies needed to build laptops with them. They’ve been producing Internet Tablets for a couple of years and could expand that into netbooks pretty easily, I would think.
