Industry Moves: Even More Brilliant; Google's Charity Chief Gets A Promotion

imageDr. Larry Brilliant, the celebrated scientist and The Well co-founder that Google (NSDQ: GOOG) hired as executive director of its philanthropic arm in 2006, is stepping up to C-level in a shake-up designed to better tie the wing’s work with products from Google itself. Brilliant is being replaced by Google new business development VP Megan Smith as GM, while he is becoming “chief philanthropy evangelist”.

He wrote in a blog post: “While we have been able to support some remarkable non-profit organizations over the past three years, our greatest impact has come when we’ve attacked problems in ways that make the most of Google’s strengths in technology and information; examples of this approach include Flu Trends, RechargeIT, Clean Energy 2030, and PowerMeter. By aligning more closely with Google as a whole, Megan will ensure that we’re better able to build innovative, scalable technology and information solutions.” Brilliant said Google would continue to set one percent of its equity and profits to philanthropy.
