Microsoft’s new and improved networking interface in Windows 7 received a nice boost of support at Mobile World Congress this week. Fourteen partners are on board with Mobile Broadband support within the new operating system. The native support is probably old news, but it’s rather timely to me.
I was working in a Starbucks yesterday and fired up Windows 7 on the MSI Wind: when I inserted my USB 727 EV-DO modem, I noticed the new “Verizon Wireless – VZ Access” network within Windows 7. It appeared just as a WiFi wireless network would. I tried to connect to Verizon’s network within Windows 7, but got an an error stating that “This connection can only be used with VZ Access Manager.”
It could be that the beta doesn’t support native connections yet or perhaps I need to install the modem without using the included software. Smith Micro developed that software and they’re one of the named partners, so my hope is that I can eventually connect to EV-DO right through Windows 7.
