Spanish mobile TV channel operator Kiwi Media has received “substantial funding” from the European Union Media Digital Distribution Fund for the mobile VoD portal Shortz!. Kiwi Media currently has 5 channels in 7 EU nations and wants to take it worldwide — it will use the funding to launch the service with an on and off portal marketing strategy, with German distributor ohm:tv handling worldwide distribution and marketing. Kiwi plans to host the channel and let operators create links to it. The press release doesn’t reveal how much funding Kiwi Media received from EU Media (which distributes funds to aid the audiovisual industry in Europe), but it requested 380,000 euros (US$477,773), about half of its total budget (PDF).
