There’s a couple of bits of news that bode well for the mobile TV industry… One is a survey of consumers in the UK by Market Tools (commissioned by vendor QuickPlay Media) which showed that 74 percent expected an increase in the usage of mobile TV by 2010 — although the amount they expect it to grow by isn’t quantified. The number of people who have viewed mobile TV and video content increased from 41 percent last year to 48 percent reports Cellular News. Some barriers to adoption are the fact that 46 percent of respondents didn’t know if their mobile operator offered mobile TV or video services, 50 percent were worried about high costs, 55 percent on monthly price plans were subscribed to voice and text services only, and 78 percent said they do not currently own a multimedia-enabled PDA/smartphone. In terms of the ability of mobile video to attract customers, 43 percent of respondents said that the operator offering the latest multimedia-enabled device would positively impact their decision to choose that operator and 44 percent said they would be more likely to subscribe to a mobile data plan if a set amount of video content was included in the package. Interestingly, people were less willing to accept advertising in return for free or discounted access to mobile TV and video content, with the proportion declining from 65 percent last year to 53 percent. The second bit of good news for the industry is Viva Vision reporting revenue growth of 90 percent in 2008 along with a 60 percent spike in subscribers. Although slower growth than in 2007 (when Viva Vision experienced a 350 percent revenue growth and a 130 percent spike in subscribers) it’s still very strong. (release)
