YouTube News: Beyonce, HD Embeds & the Rodeo

beyonceThere’s been a bunch of news out of YouTube over the last 24 hours, and since I’m felled by a cold, typing with one hand while blowing my nose with the other, I’m combining all you need to know into one handy dandy post. (sniffle)

Sony Music (s SNE) has signed a deal with YouTube (s GOOG) that will keep music videos from artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Beyonce on the site. According to Media Memo’s sources:

[T]he negotiations revolved around three components: an upfront payment from YouTube to Sony, the minimum amount Sony will receive each time someone plays a Sony video on the site, and the way the two sides will split revenue generated by any of the label’s videos.

Final terms of the deal were not disclosed, but music videos are an important source of traffic for YouTube, so negotiations with the major labels — desperate for new sources of revenue — will be intense. Earlier this year, YouTube and Warner Music got into a spat that resulted in the loss of videos on the site from the likes of Madonna and Metallica.

While the future of YouTube’s relationships with the music labels may be murky, embedded videos from the site will be crystal clear. The YouTube blog announced yesterday that the service now allows HD and widescreen embedding.

And finally, CNET reports that the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) will pay $25,000 to the animal welfare group Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) over YouTube takedown notices. In December of 2007, the PRCA had videos showing calves being dragged off to die and horses being tasered removed from YouTube. SHARK and the EFF sued and the two sides settled the case with the payout and an agreement that the PRCA will run copyright claims by SHARK before sending a takedown notice to the video-sharing site.

Nice multitasking. Typing with one hand and blowing with the other. I agree with the comment about Beyonce. Where does this leave other artists?

All good putting a big name up in Beyonce, but the cold reality is Beyonce gets the publicity dough for this new deal; while all the other mugs (content providers) buying into this upfront fee process, end up without a pot to piddle in.

Great publicity, but when you have to market to the artists themselves, you know their’s problems in the model/landscape.
