Stanza to Support EPUB, Secure Adobe PDF Books

droppedimage_5I was digging around for some eBook sales numbers when I found two interesting tidbits. Stanza for the iPhone and iPod Touch has over 1.3 million users, which is far more than I previously thought. It fits in with a GigaOM post I wrote earlier this week: the Kindle is great, but I see far more growth if Amazon expands content to mobile devices. They plan to do just that, although we don’t know details on which devices just yet.

The Stanza folks aren’t waiting on Amazon, though. Newly developed is their announcement of support for both EPUB and Adobe PDF content. EPUB is an open, XML-based format backed by the  International Digital Publishing Forum. And we all likely know what Adobe PDFs are: Stanza will support protected PDFs from publishers using Adobe Content Server 4. Lexcycle, the folks behind Stanza, say to expect these formats integrated into the software in the second quarter of this year.

Since Stanza also supports the protected eReader content I already own, I may have to take a closer look at the software on my iPhone. Some folks have told me that Stanza offers a better content purchase experience. That may well be true, but since I spend 99% of the time reading content, that experience is worth more to me. Any thoughts between the two?
