Today at noon my wife and I will be heading for the airport for a much-needed long weekend in the city where whatever happens there, stays there. At least that’s what they tell you about Las Vegas. :) This will be a trip for R & R and will be unusual due to the fact I was just there month ago for CES.
I will be taking mobile gear with me because I am a true geek and even though I won’t likely use it much, I need it with me just in case. I really agonized over what to take with me since the HP Mini 1000 MI showed up yesterday. This netbook is so small and light and the day I spent with it yesterday convinced me that this Linux-based netbook would easily do everything I might need it to do.
One factor stood in the way of bringing the Mini 1000 with me, however. I cannot use my Verizon USB727 EV-DO modem with it, at least not yet. I can probably find a way to get that modem to work with this Linux system given enough time, but time is short so it has to stay home. I am going to take the MacBook with me for getting some work done.
Vegas won’t be a netbook-free zone for us, though, as my wife is going to take the HP Mini 2140 netbook to use. She blogs too, and was on the fence about whether to bring her big laptop with her just for the limited use she expects. I told her to bring the 2140 and she’s looking forward to it, given how easy it is to carry. It’s still running Windows 7 which she hasn’t used before so I’m looking forward to her impressions of using a netbook for a trip and also Win7. It will be fun.
I had to make sure that her GMail was easily accessible on the netbook which was a breeze and I also copied her Favorites over from her Vista laptop to the 2140. She’s good to go now so this will be fun to see how it works for her. I even tested sharing my Verizon EV-DO connection with the 2140, which was very simple to do in Windows 7.
On the Mac side, I set the network preference to share the 3G connection over the Airport and on the Windows 7 side I looked at available networks and there was “James MacBook” in the list. I selected it and we were off to the races which is the way things should work.
I’m sure I’ll have mobile tech thoughts to share from the road so stay tuned for Vegas wanderings.
