Software Runs Palm OS Applications on Symbian S60 Devices

uiqscrapbookI’m late to the game on this news, but recently the StyleTap folks announced full support for Symbian S60 devices. StyleTap is basically an emulator that allows you to run older Palm OS applications on a non-Palm device. The S60 version joins the Windows Mobile version offered by StyleTap while ACCESS offers a beta Garnet VM for Nokia Internet Tablets. The S60 version of StyleTap costs the same $49.95 as the Windows Mobile version and there’s a free 14-day trial available. One of the newest features is support for “virtual double density”. Instead of taking 160×160 resolution applications and upscaling them, StyleTap tells the application that it’s running in a 320×320 double density screen and then scales up or down accordingly to enable higher display clarity.

Clearly at this price, the most obvious customers would be those that already own a fairly extensive library of Palm OS applications. It’s a great way to keep using that legacy software, especially if there’s not a current comparable application. We already know that the StyleTap folks have an experimental version of their emulator the iPhone and it’s a safe bet we’ll hear about for the Palm Pre later this year. Remember that the webOS that Palm is using for the Pre won’t natively support all those old Palm OS titles. Palm did say however, that if a third-party can make that happen, they’re all for it.
