– DotMobi Launches 1 & 2 Digit Domains: DotMobi has announced it will make available .mobi domain names with one and two alphanumeric numbers to “interested brands who provide specific concepts for the mobi domain requested”. The company makes much of the value of the names (88.com went for as much as $325,000) but it’s not clear how or if it will charge for the new domains, saying that “rather than selling these names, dotMobi is looking to provide these names to strong brands with high-quality mobile content”. Sure, short names are good for typing into browsers on mobile keypads, but that didn’t stop the top-level domain being .mobi instead of — say — .m. (release)

— Opera Mini Social Network Figures: Opera has released the growth of social networks accessed through its Opera Mini browser: The growth is hard to pin down because it’s unclear how much of the growth in usage of a website is due to people switching to Opera Mini (for example), and you can’t make generalizations from one browser even if it does have 20 million users. That being said there are some interesting figures, like Facebook growing its unique users by 1632 percent to become the top social network accessed through Opera Mini in the US, edging out MySpace which grew 52 percent. There’s also the top 10 list of social networking sites accessed through the browser which at suggests some big names (but not necessarily the biggest, of course): vkontakte.ru, facebook.com, friendster.com, orkut.com, odnoklassniki.ru, peperonity.com, hi5.com, myspace.com, mamba.ru, mocospace.com.
