Apple 24-inch Cinema Display on the way, again

apple-24-inch-cinema-displayCall me fickle, call me what you will (just be nice).  I have an Apple 24-inch LED Cinema Display on the way again that will be here at Mobile Tech Manor tomorrow.  I am certainly fickle as you know if you’ve been following my ordering of one of these babies and my subsequent canceling of the order.  So why did I break down and order one again?  The answer is simple and it’s a two-word answer- Apple Store.

I had a few hours free a couple of days ago in San Francisco and I headed out to do some shopping near my hotel.  I was quite surprised to see an Apple Store just a block from the hotel so like any true geek I headed in to kill some time.  The SF store was like every other Apple Store I’ve visited and I walked around for a bit before heading back to the table where the displays lived.

I spent a fair bit of time playing with the 24-inch display and checking out how good the display looked and all the cables and such.  I was feeling the tug of geekdom telling me I still wanted one but was fighting it off when the Apple rep stopped by.  I explained how I had ordered one and canceled it because I couldn’t justify the high price for the convenience it offered paired with my MacBook.

The rep listened to my tale, really listened, and then asked if my MacBook was in my backpack.  Of course it was, I take my gear everywhere so once he confirmed that he told me to take it out and hook it up to the display.  This is what sets Apple apart from other companies when it comes to their stores.  If the customer needs to see how their gear works, let them hook it up and see for themselves.

So that’s what I did.  I pulled the MacBook out and hooked up the cables from the monitor and played with it for a good 30 minutes.  I got to see first-hand how it would serve as an external monitor with my own setup and I also got to see how easy it is to disconnect to take my MacBook mobile.  I did that several times to see how well the big monitor was connected to the MacBook as it would be back at Mobile Tech Manor and also how seamlessly the disconnect process worked.  In a word- flawlessly.  So I pulled out my credit card and ordered one on the spot for delivery which will be tomorrow.

Yes, color me fickle maybe but color Apple very good at what they do.  Make impressive hardware and provide an in-store experience second to none.
