A week ago NYT ran a story claiming Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) would restrict the number of handsets running Windows Mobile — TamsPPC did a follow-up and got this response: “The implication in The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) that Microsoft will limit the number of Windows Mobile devices is not accurate.” That’s the specific quote, taken from a couple of paragraphs of how Microsoft will be “investing more in working with its partners to ensure the best hardware-software integration”. We did a follow-up asking if Microsoft will actively limit the number of handsets running Windows Mobile and got this response:
“What Microsoft talked about was that it will be focusing on building out the quality of the Windows Mobile experience, investing more in working with its partners to ensure the best hardware-software integration. While this may result in fewer phone models, Microsoft will continue working with our partners to innovate on the Windows Mobile platform.”
My conclusion from all of this is that Microsoft will be working harder to integrate the software with the handset which may set the bar higher and as a result there will be fewer handset models running Windows Mobile, something they’re prepared to live with. However, MS will not be putting an upper limit on the number of handsets running the OS.
