For some, a new year means a new approach. Google is taking that to heart with their new Product Ideas webpage, a place where people can suggest new features or vote for those already suggested. It’s no surprise to me that Google’s first iteration for product ideas is specific to mobile. Their move into the portable device space with the Android OS coupled with continued enhancement for phone-specific services point to a big mobile year for the search giant.
There are already over 500 submissions, although I’ve see a few repeats in my casual browsing. I’ll be going through the bulk of the list later today and voting for the one’s I’d like to see. I’ve already cast my first ballot for a native, over-the-air Google Calendar sync. I actually don‘t use the Calendar app on my iPhone because I don’t connect the device to my Mac, except for an occasional music sync or firmware upgrade. Instead, I either hit up my two Google Calendars on the web in Safari or I use Google’s application. Essentially, both do the same thing. These methods works fine, but I’d prefer a native synchronization solution that doesn’t use Mobile Me or any other third-party application.
Have a look-see at the list when you get a chance and be sure to submit your own thoughts or vote for features that you’d like to see. 2008 was a good year for the social web; perhaps 2009 will be the year of social product development?
