Finally a new notebook battery technology that promises longer life

Lithium_batteryNotebook battery technology has been largely unchanged for as long as we can remember.  The hardware components used in most notebooks has undergone all the power tweaking that can be done and it seems that battery life is now a factor of how large a battery is used.  That has a big impact on how large the total package is in size and weight.  Today comes some promising information about a new way to make lithium batteries like those used in notebooks that promises a staggering battery life increase of 8 times.

A professor in Korea is claiming that his department has developed a method for using silicon instead of graphite in the construction of lithium batteries resulting in the 800% storage capacity increase.  No word has surfaced indicating when this technology might be commercially feasible so for now we’ll have to settle on keeping those big honking batteries needed for long life.  I have a feeling that this technology, if true, might be awfully expensive.
