After several benchmarking experiments throughout the morning on the MSI Wind, I think it’s safe to draw a conclusion. And here it is rocket-scientists: overclocking a computer makes it run….. wait for it….. faster! Of course, this won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s actually used a computer for more than five minutes in their lifetime, but it’s our job to make sure we set the records straight. I’ll be looking at what the impact is on battery life when time allows, but for the benchmark junkies out there who want to see what the new MSI Wind BIOS adds in terms of raw numbers, this one’s for you.
Remember, version 1.09 of the BIOS re-enables the "turbo" mode that went away in an earlier BIOS version. Now you can toggle overclocking between 8%, 15% and 24% to heat up that li’l Intel Atom when your Wind is on AC power. Pressing the FN + F10 key enables the mode and if you’re on battery power, the feature actually forces an under-clock. I’ve got Crystal Mark numbers for the underclocking mode, standard mode and all three overclock speeds, so have at it!
- Underclock: 18,538
- Baseline / standard: 26,691
- Overclock at 8%: 28,729
- Overclock at 15%: 30,053
- Overclock at 24% 32,281
In additon to the CPU, CrystalMark tests memory and hard drive throughput plus graphics performance so that’s why the overclock numbers aren’t simply 8%, 15% and 24% higher than the baseline.The real question now is: how much does battery life decrease in each of these modes?
