San Jose, Calif.-based startup Siri has raised $8.5 million in a first round of funding from Menlo Ventures and Morgenthaler Ventures. The still-stealth company is developing some sort of Web-based virtual assistant that’s based on tech from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a beta version of which Webware says should see the light of day in the first half of 2009.
