U.S. Handset Sales Up 5 Percent; Motorola Maintains No. 1 Spot: Report

U.S. mobile phone shipments increased five percent in the second quarter, compared to the same period a year ago to reach 42 million units, according to a report by Strategy Analytics released today. Despite the negative reports on Motorola (NYSE: MOT), the company had a strong quarter, and was able to retain its No. 1 position in the U.S., by recording a 25.8 percent market share. Other findings:

Motorola: In the second quarter, Motorola’s revenues beat estimates, and it managed to ship more phones than it thought it would. Strategy Analytics claimed that in the U.S. that was because Motorola had solid relationships with both CDMA and GSM carriers. However, in its worldwide report it released last month, it said Motorola sold 28.1 million handsets, down from 35.5 million a year ago, and that its marketshare was 9.5 percent, down from 13.7 percent a year ago.

LG: The handset maker secured the No. 2 position in the U.S. for the first time in almost 2 years, due partly to sales of 3G devices with AT&T.

RIM: BlackBerry achieved a double-digit marketshare in the U.S. for the first time, based on the success of its balanced portfolio of consumer and enterprise handsets.
