If the native power management features of your PC just aren’t "green" enough for you, Edison might be right up your alley. The free application from Verdiem helps you save and monitor your computer’s energy usage. According to the company, over 90% of the world’s desktops aren’t using any power management features, which sounds like an opportunity to me. Verdiem takes advantage of that opportunity by offering simple power-management settings and even computes your power savings and CO2 emission reduction.
You’ll need Vista or Windows XP SP2 and up for Edison, which is a 27.3 MB download. Instead of managing power settings solely by device inactivity, Edison offers a nice slider mechanism to save more or less overall power. Plus, you can configure different settings during "Work" and "Non-Work" times. Hmm… I know what the "Work" time is… what’s that other one mean?
Are there better ways to manage your PCs power? Sure. Edison isn’t adding any new power management features. However, what it does do is to put a nice face on mundane power saving settings while also offering useful information for the socially conscious. If nothing else, Verdiem can raise power management awareness with Edison and that’s no wasted effort in my book.
