Garmin Delays Launch Of Nuvifone Again

imagePersonal navigation device company Garmin has delayed the launch of its smartphone for the second time, pushing the launch date into the first half of 2009 because “meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated” reports Reuters. Garmin’s nüvifone was announced in January, indicating it would be available in the third quarter of this year, and is probably a response to the trend that sees GPS-enabled handsets more popular than stand-alone devices. The phone will apparently use Garmin’s proprietary operating system, which means that it will look and work like Garmin’s other devices and thus be familiar to its customers, but also probably contributes to the problem with meeting carrier demands. Carriers are trying to reduce the number of operating systems they work with, and it would probably be in Garmin’s best interest in the long term if it adapted one of the open source offerings for its handset.
