NBC Takes Mobile Seriously For Olympics

NBC has released details of its digital coverage for the Beijing Olympics, and there’s a fair amount in there. NBCOlympics Mobile will include most things on the mobile web page (accessed via http://mobile.nbcolympics.com in the browser or by texting “OLYMPICS” to 51515), such as live news, highlights, feature video, Team USA profiles, slideshow galleries, voting polls and alerts sign-ups available now, with medal tallies results and schedules available when they become relevant. The SMS or e-mail alerts will include breaking news, medal results, event previews, athlete alerts and reminders for TV schedules. There will also be free photo and video highlight alerts for top Olympic sports. The video services will also be on-deck with select mobile providers, which should make it easier for those customers to see them.

Exclusive TV Channel? A couple of weeks ago it was announced that AT&T (NYSE: T) would carry the MediaFLO channel on an exclusive basis). The latest release from NBC notes that it will launch NBC Olympics 2Go, “an all-new 24/7 mobile TV channel featuring the best of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. NBC Olympics 2Go will include complete event coverage from NBC, USA, MSNBC, and CNBC programming.” On the website it notes that the service is only available for select handsets and wireless service providers, which could mean “MediaFLO-capable handsets on AT&T”… if so it should really say that. If it’s a different TV channel to the MediaFLO one, AT&T’s exclusive doesn’t look as good as it did…
