We showed you pics of Windows XP running on the OLPC just before the news broke that Microsoft had released a final version of Windows XP customized for the charitable notebook. Mary Jo Foley tells us that Microsoft has released the OLPC version of Windows XP to manufacturing and that those who purchased one through the Buy 1 Get 1 program will NOT have the version of XP made available to them. It’s not clear exactly what Microsoft has tailored for the OLPC but no doubt it has been stripped down a bit to run better on this low-end notebook and probably tailored to the specific hardware in the OLPC. The question now is if Microsoft is willing to tailor XP for a charitable purpose will they also be willing to make a similarly customized version for low-end notebooks, or netbooks as they are also called?
