Goodbye Treo 755p for Verizon, we hardly knew you

Verizon755pWell that was pretty quick, no? PalmInfoCenter has confirmation from Verizon Wireless that the Palm Treo 755p is getting phased out. There’s no official public time line on this but if I recall, the handset hit Verizon’s network in the fourth quarter of last year, so it’s not that long in the tooth. Verizon indicates that the phase-out is to focus on the highly successful Palm Centro, which has a fairly comparable feature-set at a much lower per-unit price.

Here’s hoping that Palm continues to actively support the Treo 755p for Verizon for a while yet… let’s not forget that most consumers in this market are locked into two-year agreements. It just doesn’t seem right in my book for a handset model to essentially see end-of-life before that agreement is up. Then again, Apple essentially did just that with my first-gen iPhone, now that I think about it, but they’ve already shown their commitment to support it and add new features. In fairness to Palm, they plan to continue supporting the device and they did just shoot out a firmware upgrade for the 755p a few weeks back.
