Deep in the land of EV-DO

I was rudely awakened at 4 am this morning by blazing flashes of lightning and peals of thunder.  Hurricane Dolly has missed us here in Houston but yesterday blasted us all day with rain, rain and more rain.  The rain has slowed overnight but the storms still dance around the area and the lightning is striking with regularity.  The power was knocked out briefly here at Mobile Tech Manor and that’s what woke me so early, the home alarm chimes when that happens.  The power came back on after a few minutes so I thought all was back to normal but it was not to be.  A while later the cable TV service went out, no doubt due to the electrical storm that lashes the area.  When it goes down unfortunately it takes the internet connectivity with it and it’s now been out for almost an hour.

This would be a show-stopper for many but not for me with my EV-DO backup.  While I have Verizon EV-DO service and the v740 ExpressCard modem for use while mobile in times like these I really appreciate having a backup entry into the web.  So while my speeds are nothing to write home about they are adequate for doing most of the things I do and it is great that I can do them at all.  Mobile technology comes to the rescue once again, even though I’m not very mobile at the moment.  It makes me appreciate having redundancy for connectivity and it also drives home the primary fear of working solely in the cloud.  Without that redundancy I’d be dead in the water.
