Sprint upgrades firmware for Palm Centro: My Location arrives

Centroupdate_sprint107Sprint customers that own a Palm Centro have another "to do" on their list today: the relatively inexpensive smarthphone gets a firmware update today. Of course, maybe you could just put off the upgrade. For some reason, I jump all over firmware upgrades… sometimes I even install them a day early. I know, I know… a real mobile-tech risk taker. According to Sprint, here’s what you’ll see in the new firmware, which is version1.07 for those keeping track:

  • Improved Gmail IMAP compatibility and an updated setupwizard with the new Gmail settings
  • Updated compatibility for Google Mobile Maps My Locationfeature to approximate your current location – great fordirections, finding nearby restaurants or business, or checkinglocal traffic.
  • Improved ongoing delivery of email sent to VersaMailaccounts using Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology via Exchange ActiveSync
  • Bluetooth usability enhancements and updates
  • Sprint TV performance enhancements
  • Enhanced AOL Instant Messenger performance
  • Improved performance when adding a contact using MobileVoice Control
  • Improved email attachment handling
  • Changed default camera shutter sound to “ON.” Audibleshutter “click” will be heard when taking photos
  • Allows Preferred Roaming List updates over the air

This firmware confirms what we heard back in December with regards to the My Location function coming to the Palm Centro. Bear in mind that the Centro doesn’t have a GPS radio, so any location-based functions are really done through cell tower triangulation. In my experience however, the My Location feature of Google Mobile Maps works pretty darn good, so I’d be all over this firmware upgrade for that reason alone. Ah, who am I kidding: I’ve never met a firmware upgrade I wouldn’t install.
