FCC Preparing To Test White Space Use At Large Entertainment Events

The Federal Communications Commission is receiving invites from a host of companies and organizations vying to be chosen for white-space testing by the FCC. Add the Recording Academy to that list. The group, which puts on the Grammy Awards, has asked the FCC to test unlicensed devices over white space during the Lollapalooza music festival August 1 in Chicago. The FCC has already pinpointed 10 test sites around Washington, D.C. and plans to test in sports and entertainment venues as well, but hasn’t selected locations yet, Broadcasting and Cable reported. After results from tests failed to meet concerns earlier this year, the commission began field testing again this week. Broadcasters and others are concerned the devices might interfere with digital TV broadcasts, which operate alongside the band being tested for unlicensed use.
