Dell adds 128 GB SSD option, same price as old 64 GB drive

Samsung128gbssdStarting tomorrow, Dell customers can choose a 128 GB Solid State Drive option at the same price today’s customers are getting a 64 GB SSD drive. Yup, the $649 price for the lower-capacity model is exactly what the price for the new higher-capacity component. Clearly like many of the other industry players, Dell is moving to the lower cost drives that use Multi-Level Cell technology. Single-level drives have been around for a few years, but likely won’t ever be cost-competitive in the consumer market, pending any new breakthroughs, of course. My guess is that this drive is the one Samsung introduced at this year’s CES.

Dell says that U.S. Precision and Latitude orders will get the option tomorrow, while the XPS and Alienware lines will receive it next week. Other than power-users that try to carry a terabyte of apps, music and video with them, 128 GB should keep most consumers happy, provided they have another system (either desktop or laptop) to store media on. 128 GB on a mobile system is probably overkill for me personally, but then again, I have the bad habit of storing most of my data online. That actually raises an interesting question: for a netbook, or other companion mobile device, how much storage is enough? The answer varies for each individuals needs of course, but I know I could do my web work with as little as 4 GB; I did just that at CES with the Asus Eee PC 701. I think 12- or 16 GB ought to do me. How about you?
