As expected, Palm introduced their newest Windows Mobile 6.1 Treo today: the 800w has arrived. While I wouldn’t call the unit groundbreaking when compared to other recent devices, it’s a positive step for fans of the Treo form factor. The touchscreen display is a nice 320 x 320 and I’m really liking how Palm included a hardware toggle to turn WiFi on and off. This saves a few taps from going into the Windows Mobile Connection Manager to do the same thing.
This is a CDMA device for Sprint’s network and supports the speedy EV-DO Revision A offering from the carrier. While I don’t have a Sprint account, the same type of technology is used with my Verizon EV-DO card and I routinely see downloads in the 1.5 Mbps range. I must be getting old because I remember the first T1 lines at work with the same download speed. Yes, my jaw dropped back then. ;)
The 800w also offers a GPS receiver, 128MB RAM / 256MB ROM, 2-megapixel camera, and microSD slot for memory expansion. Oh, don’t forget the Bluetooth 2.0 with stereo support for wireless tunes! With a two-year commitment and applicable rebates / discounts, you should be able to nab this for around $250.
