Current iPhone owners: looks like you’ll get the subsidized iPhone 3G price

Iphoneupgrade

I’ve been checking my AT&T account daily to see if I could upgrade my first-gen iPhone, even though I’ve only had it for 11 months. In fact, Barb’s only had hers for six months or so. I don’t plan to get a 3G iPhone but this should help confirm the answer to that nagging question current iPhone owners have: "Can I get the 3G iPhone at the subsidized price?" Up to today, my account wasn’t showing that either of our two iPhones were eligible, but that changed today. This very second, I can actually move to practically any subsdized phone of my choosing if I agree to a new two-year contract.

I won’t be doing that as the iPhone does everything I need and I really don’t want to add another $15 to my monthly bill for the next 24 months. That’s what the data plan and 200 SMS messages would add if I moved to the 3G iPhone or another smartphone. I’ll stick with what I have instead of the more traditional plan that goes with the non-traditional 3G iPhone. If you want to upgrade, now’s a good time to check your eligibility. I suspect that if you own an iPhone today, you’ll be eligible. If you’re not, however, drop a note in the comments and let us know when you bought your current phone.
