News From MoMB

ScreenshotSometimes it seems as though every web site I actually use is in beta. If it seems that way to you too – it’s because they are. The Museum of Modern Betas, which attempts to track every Web 2.0 beta launch, has some reasonably hard information on this. They just posted their 5555th beta, and took the time to analyze what’s gone before. Among their findings:

  • Over 90% of the sites they’ve reviewed are still in beta. Interestingly, more have actually launched for real than have vanished entirely.
  • Google has pushed out more beta services than Yahoo and Microsoft combined.
  • If you’re looking to stand out, give your new site a name starting with X. Only 26 of the first 5555 betas picked that initial.
