WiFi detection sneakers for casual Fridays… if you dare

Wifisneakers_2Before you say anything, you’re right. These aren’t the most trendy lookin’ sneaks on the market. But until Air Jordans come with electronics built-in, it looks like these kicks might have a place in the market. The ASRD line, or A Step in the Right Direction (which is clearly debatable), has a flap that fits over the laces. Inside is a WiFi detector that sniffs out 802.11 signals for 50 meters, which I think we can all agree on: is better than sniffing inside the sneakers. Three LED indicator lights show signal strength: solid lights mean there’s a signal while blinking lights mean you’re pretty much the laughing stock in a low-geek-environment.

I’m starting to think that the market for WiFi detection devices has to be dwindling. We’re getting to the point where so many devices have integrated WiFi that you don’t have to have something separate just to see if there’s a signal. I realize not everyone’s phone has WiFi and that you don’t want to fire up a computer just to see if there’s a nearby hotspot, but I’m thinking that in three to five years, the market for WiFi detectors will be dried up. That means you’ll want to order these sneakers now… to complement your WiFi detector T-Shirt!
