Back in September, we heard about the iPAQ 900 series from HP, but the device never appeared here. HP apparently hasn’t forgotten about the Windows Mobile handset because it got "re"-rolled out in Berlin yesterday. The official press release says the 3G GSM handset running Windows Mobile 6.1 starts shipping worldwide on June 30th, but prices will vary by region. The 900-series handset offers a full QWERTY keyboard for input, but interesting to me is the 2.46-inch QVGA display: it’s a landscape-oriented touchscreen. We don’t normally see touch on WinMo devices with this type of screen layout. HP threw in a 3-megapixel shooter, WiFi, tri-band HSDPA, quad-band GSM, GPS and Bluetooth for connectivity.
There seems to be a little bit of redesign from the initial introduction: gone is the squarish looking D-pad. Now there’s a more conventional circular pad with a button in the center. I would have liked to see a little more oomph on the inside: HP is using a Marvel PXA270 at 416 MHz combined with 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB of ROM. That storage isn’t bad, but the 416 MHz PXA270 has been around the block a time or two in the past four years. The 520- or 624-MHz flavor would have been nice to see, given the wait. Regardless, it’s nice to see that HP hasn’t fully abandoned the iPAQ line given its signifcance in handheld history.
