Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt, who sits on Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) board, said today that because Google is working on its own mobile operating system that may compete with the iPhone, he occasionally must excuse himself from Apple board meetings, “I’ve only done this once or twice, so it’s not as common as it sounds,” Schmidt said at an event in San Francisco sponsored by Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, reported MarketWatch. It will be interesting to see how Google and Apple handle their relationship going forward as Google becomes a bigger force in the mobile device market. Schmidt reiterated today that the vast majority of Google searches conducted on a mobile phone are from an iPhone. In an effort to downplay the competition, Schmidt said there will be distinct differences between the iPhone and the Android devices, although admitted that both companies share a similar goal of more prominently featuring a full internet browser on devices.
