One thing we are sure of is that there is a veritable explosion of low-cost mini-notebooks flying around the computescape. Every day finds one or two new ones announced and now that the big players like HP and Dell are involved just about everybody is accounted for, right? Not yet but that may be changing soon. One of the most experienced OEMs at producing small PCs is Sony as they have been producing mini-notebooks for longer than anyone on the planet. The problem is while great devices Sony mini-notebooks and UMPCs tend to be on the pricey side. That may be changing according to information leaked from the WiMax Expo being held in Taipei near CompuTex. It seems that notebook maker Quanta is showing a mini-notebook in their booth that spies have determined is manufactured by Sony.
A check of the laptop’s properties confirmed the laptop is based on a1.6GHz C7-M processor from Via and listed Sony as the manufacturer. When the existence of Sony’s name on the machine was pointed out to aQuanta executive manning the booth, he quickly closed the propertieswindow and declined to explain why Sony was listed as the manufacturer.
Quantas is claiming this mystery Sony mini-notebook will be shipping in Q3 of this year. Sony is not available for comment, of course. :)
