India had 261 million mobile phone subscriptions at the end of March, ranking it second in terms of the size of the mobile market — behind China, of course. “The Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India reported that more than 10 million new subscribers were added in March compared with seven to eight million in previous months. Wireless connections outnumber the 39 million fixed-line phones in India by seven to one” reports Variety. At the end of January, China Mobile had a total of 376.38 million mobile users, meaning the country as a whole must be clocking near half a billion, but India has the advantage (for foreign content publishers) of a large English-speaking population.
