SatNav Offers SatGuide For Laptops, Desktops; MapMyIndia Introduces iNav

SatNav Technologies, a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) company that is part of BCCLs Private Treaty portfolio, has introduced SatGuide – laptop/desktop based maps for individuals, reports Tech2. The software apparently works both as a maps service (not requiring a connection to work), and a navigation device when connected via an external GPS based bluetooth receiver. It’s a paid software, priced at Rs. 4290 for the entire country, and Rs. 6990 with the bluetooth receiver. But you’re not going to stick your laptop on your windscreen; there’s a personal navigation device also priced at Rs. 15990, compared to MapMyIndia Navigator, priced at Rs. 17,990 (both with all-India maps). The desktop/laptop variant does give users a cheaper option, though. SatNav also has a not-very-usable maps site called roadsofindia.com, which competes with MapMyIndia, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) Maps (multilingual, powered by MapMyIndia), and Bangalore based iciti.in.

Not sure of how recent this is, but I also noticed that MapMyIndia has launched a mobile GPS product called iNav. Google Maps already come pre-loaded on certain Nokia (NYSE: NOK) handsets in India, but what they lack is voice based directions, which “iNav Loaded” has. There’s also “iNav Connect”, in collaboration with WayFinder. As a layperson, to me these products appeared to be fairly similar, with only a few differences when it came to features. MapMyIndia will do well to put up a feature comparison between the two devices.
