25 Who Ditched Infotech for Cleantech

Bill Joy

Background: Chief Scientist, Sun

Current: Cleantech VC at Kleiner Perkins

Bill Joy founded Sun Microsystems along with fellow cleantech convert Vinod Khosla. Joy served as Sun’s chief scientist until 2003. Joy wrote an incendiary piece for Wired called “Why the Future Doesn’t Need Us.” Despite his pessimistic view of a robot-controlled future, he joined Kleiner Perkins as a partner in 2005 and serves on their “GreenTech Team.” Joy is a true cleantech advocate and thinks the investment opportunity in this sector is bigger than the Internet.
